On 18 May (Fri.), JAAGA opened Annual Convention 2012 at Grand Hill Ichigaya
Hotel. It was consisted of general assembly, memorial lecture, presentation
of letter of appreciation and reception.
General Assembly
It was carried out with 56 regular members from 3:00pm to 4:15pm. 134
regular members had submitted the letter of proxy for decisions. Before
the bills deliberation, all participants prayed silently for the soul of
Gen.Yonekawa and Gen.Tsumagari (former JAAGA president) who had past away
last year. Then president Yoshida mentioned that he took office as JAAGA
president since 16 January after late Gen.Tsumagari, and introduced some
epochs concerned with JAAGA. No.1 to No.6 bills were deliberated. No.5
bill related on JAAGA officers of 2012 was proposed by the president and
was approved with one consent. Other bills, the activity results of 2011,
the activity plan of 2012, the budget excution result of 2011 and the budget
of 2012, and the revision of JAAGA's charter were discussed and approved. At
the end of general assembly, new officers were introduced and the officers
to retire were given the words of thanks by president Yoshida.
Memorial lecture
The memorial lecture was held after general assembly for 1.5 hours from
4:20pm. Lecturer was Lt.Gen. Field, commander of USFJ and Fifth Air Force
of USAF. Lecture subject was "Fifth Generation Fighter", this
subject is supposed to be very hot today and very interesting to JAAGA
members and JASDF airmen. Before begining of lecture, JAAGA president introduced
Lt.Gen.Field to audience and addressed "Gen.Field will get new assignment
next month, and we would like to express sinsere appreciation to Gen.Field
who accepted our proposal about the lecture today although he's very busy." At
the begining of lecture, the commander made clear the reasons he chose
this lecture title. They were from his pilot experience of F-16 / F-22
and JAAGA members' matter of concern. In the core part of lecture, general
explained the characteristics of fifth generation fighter, like as stealth
performance, sensors and joint avio-system, maintainability and super-cruise
capability through his experience as F-22 pilot. At the end of lecture,
commander said "when we consider the exceptional performance of fifth
generation jet fighters like F-22, it's not appropriate to simply give
a code F to them. And I think you all have same idea when JASDF obtain
F-35." During question and answer time after the lecture, very specific
questions were submitted and commander Field kindly answered to them. At
the end of lecture, president Yoshida expressed appreciation to Gen.Field
and handed memento to him.

Reception
Reception was started at 6:30PM and 200 persons attended. Mr.Nakatani
and Mr.Uto (Diet members), Gen.& Mrs. Iwasaki (Chief of Joint Staff),
Gen.& Mrs. Kataoka (Air Chief) and several commanders of JASDF's units
in Kanto area, and Lt.Gen & Mrs. Field, Maj.Gen.& Mrs. Raymond
(vice commander of 5AF) and airmen from Yokota AB were invited as distinguished
guests. Other honor guests were Mr. Dohke (JANAFA vice president) and Mr.
Takegouchi (president of Tsubasa-kai). At the beginning of reception, the
national anthems of US & Japan were played, then president Yoshida
remarked "Looking back on last year, there are two major events. One
is the great support operation to Japan through Tomodachi Operation by
US Forces since East Japan disaster hit, other one is that US and Japan
coped with North Korea missile launching just after ADC headquarters had
moved to Yokota AB. During Tomodachi Operation we Japanese peoples could
touch the deep friendship US Forces showed us. In case of missile launching
by North Korea, commanders and staffs of both countries countered in well
conjunction with. JAAGA will support to "Face to Face" activities
by USAF and JASDF on Yokota AB from the side." After president's speech,
several distinguished guests had addresses. All expressed appriciation
on JAAGA support to USAF and JASDF. Two hour reception was very friendly
and all attendants could enjoy conversation and foods.
