"Tsubasa-kai/JAAGA delegation '06 to United States of America" was organized with JAAGA president Takegouchi as head. Delegation members were president Takegouchi, vice president Yamaguchi, director Ochi, director Shimizu and regular member Okamoto. During 12 day tour from 17th to 28th Sept., we mainly attended to Air Force Association (AFA) Annual Convention held in Washington DC, and we visited the headquaters of Pacific Air Force (PACAF) in Hawaii, Nellis Air Force Base. Nev., Pentagon and Japan Embassy in Washington DC. In this tour we met many active duty generals of USAF and JAAGA honorary members lived in USA, then we deepened our goodwill and friendship with each other. And we could recognize the outline of USAF status and future plan through this visiting.
Before AFA Annual Convention, we had JAAGA 10th anniversary party in Washington DC., and invited the all honorary members. We had Gen. & Mrs. Hawly, Gen.& Mrs. Myers, Gen. & Mrs. Eberhart, Gen. & Mrs. Hall, Gen. & Mrs. Waskow and the attaches of Japan Embassy attend. Also Ms.Maggie Surls joined this party from Las Vegas, Nev.. We regret that Gen. Davis and Gen. Hester were not able to participate because of their business. But we could luckily meet Gen. & Mrs. Hester, the commander of PACAF, at hotels in Hawaii and Washington DC. The party was started by being pleased with each other's health together. After Gen. Takegouchi had a welcom speech and presented 10th anniversary mementos to honorary members, we all enjoyed very happy talking. We could know the dignity of JAAGA 10 years' history.
AFA is the nationwide association consisted of retired and active duty airmen, and publishes "Air Force Magazine" as bulletin, also AFA which has 130,000 members greets the 60th anniversary this year. But the number of enrollee to AFA is degreasing now, we heard.
We attended the amazing ceremony of convention and observed many displays by defense contractors in convention hall. We could touch the greatness of "US Air Power".
In the armed forces of United States, the organization reform goes now with large-scale. In addition to traditional mission, they must quickly operate the joint forces and must cooperate with multinational forces in order to measure world-scale disaster, terrorism beyond a national frame, diffusion of mass destruction weapon etc.. They are struggling with the organization reform at the Pentagon level to the forward deployed units level. We were able to have a glimpse of a part of this reform.
We could hear the precious opinions related with BMD (Ballistic Missile Defense), US bases realignment, JASDF's FX (Fighter Experimental), Japan-U.S. joint exercise at DoD, HQ/USAF and HQ/PACAF. Also we could see Predator which is operated in Iraq now and USAF Thunderbirds at Nelis AFB.
We were able to meet honarary member, many high ranking officers and many exchange officers who have experience to work with JASDF in Japan. They all have friendly feeling and thanks for Japan, we realize that the support activity that JAAGA has carried out for USAF bear fruit today. Finally we appreciate that many peoples supported this tour. (Reported by director Shimizu)
