Annual Tsubasa-Kai /JAAGA delegation was sent to the United States in autumn
2003. The 6 members joined this tour, Gen.Sugiyama (vice president of Tsubasa-Kai),
Lt.Gen. Itoh (vice president of JAAGA), Lt.Gen. Shimizu, Lt.Gen. Iwasaki,
Maj.Gen.Suzukiand, Colonel Sakai (all are retired from JASDF). For 17 days
from 25 Sept. to 11 Oct. 2003, they promoted friendly relations between
Japan-U.S. through having talks with the dignitaries of Department of Defense
and visiting to 8 Air Force bases. We could know about the present status
and trend of U.S. Air Force. Last year, JAAGA requested 5 generals, who
had been the commander of 5th Air Force, to be the JAAGA honorary member
and they pleasantly accepted. This time, we visited the offices of 3 generals
to meet, General Myers (Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff), Gen. Eberhart
(Commander, North American Aerospace Defense Command), Lt. Gen. Hester
(Commander, Air Force Special Operations Command), and were invited in
the cottage of the Washington suburbs Anna Lake side by Lt. Gen Hall (retired). The
JAAGA emblem and honorary member's name printed business cards were presented
to them. Although Langley AFB which was the first visiting place suffered
the serious damage of hurricane Isabella who attacked immediately before,
the ACC Vice Commander Lt. Gen. Wright (former commander of Misawa AB)
was pleased to receive Tubasa-Kai /JAAGA members. At Nellis AFB, they could
see closely F-22 and UAV Predator large-played an active part in Iraq,
with the warm consideration by Maj. Gen. Wood, commander of Air Warfare
Center. The generals and Ms. Maggie experienced to work in Japan talked
about the days they had spent to JAAGA members with favorable impression.
It has been recognized that the JAAGA's various activities contributes
to improve Japan-U.S. relationship as for the significance. Also, the dignitaries
who members met this time expressed gratitude to the airlift support to
US by JASDF (C-130s) in fighting to terrorism. Moreover, the activity of
JASDF at Cope Thunder Exercise in Alaska in which F-15 first participated
had high evaluation, added the dignitaries. We were able to understand
the following matters through this visiting. They are, the connection by
network with integrative connection of air to ground and air to surface
as teachings of the Iraq War, the much more precision guided and more miniaturization
arms for damage localization of the target circumference, the importance
of a special strategy air force units in connection with it, the usefulness
of a UAV (unmanned aircraft) and it's future possibilities, the status
of North American Aerospace Defense Command organized in October last year
and the status quo of enhancement of the air-defense attitude in U.S. mainland
after 11 September, and the aerospace military power-the role of the assistance
from the space which especially makes a satellite a subject, etc. They
are the contents acquired just because all were USAF who experienced a
new battle. By the way, Maj.Gen. Watanabe (military attache) and Lt.Col.
Yamashita (air attache) in Washington DC. Cap. Takeda (exchange officer)
at Tyndall AFB., and Maj. Takashima (instructor, Air Force Academy) we
met and encouraged. I had the precious experience through this visiting
United States. This is also the result of the performance of the Japan-U.S.
alternating current over many years regardless of active service and a
retired person. We could touch the strong ties with U.S. Force's peoples
and the persons at a visiting place here and there. We appreciate peoples
related on this visiting US. (Reported by secretariat Shimizu)
