On 15 September, Nakatsukasa group leader and 14 regular members visited Yokota Air Base. After the group leader had courtesy visit to Maj.Gen.Angelella, vice commander of Fifth Air Force (5AF), we received the command briefing of 5AF, luncheon and base tour. During the base tour, we were guided to 374 Airlift Wing (374AW), and received the briefing about 374AW and observed their aircraft fleet (C-130, C-12, UH-1) there.
At the 5AF briefing, they explained the mission and organization of 5AF etc., also gave us an account of the outline about Air Defense Command (ADC/JASDF) Headquarters facilities which is under construction now. The construction is nearly finished, and ADC headquarters is connected to 5AF headquarters with the underground passage. Gen.Angelella pointed that there is the enough space for the world first class Air Operation center in this underground area. The facilities construction in Yokota AB this time is so complex, because the relocation of USAF facilities and the newly construction of JASDF facilities in Yokota must be parallelly done at the same time. Although JASDF base is separately located in USAF base in Misawa, but in Yokota the both side facilities are located side by side in order for working jointly JASDF and USAF. For example, JASDF generals' housing is next to USAF generals' housing and JASDF airmen's barrack is next to USAF dormitory. It's a fully worked-out plan.
At the 374AW briefing, the history of Yokota AB and the origin of the name of Yokota are explained.
We sincerely express the appreciation to Gen.Angelella and all members who accepted our visiting to Yokota AB..
